The mission of the GUSD Special Education Department is to support students with disabilities in achieving their highest potential in all areas of learning which includes academics, social and emotional and independent life skills. It is the goal of GUSD to support students in becoming productive members of our community.
GUSD provides services to students with mild to moderate disabilities. As such, all GUSD special education teachers hold an Education Specialist Credential in the area of Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN). In partnership with our County Office of Education, students with moderate to severe disabilities are provided service through our SELPA. MCOE special education teachers hold an Education Specialist Credential in the area of Extensive Support Needs (ESN)
Services and Programs
Students receive services based on their needs as noted in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). This may be a single service or a combination of services including:
Speech and language Support - GUSD employs two Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP) as well as three Speech and Language Pathologist Assistants (SLPAs) to provide support for articulation, voice fluency, and language disorders.
Specialized Academic Instruction - GUSD employs Resource and Special Day Class teachers to service mild/moderate students within the district. Special education teachers are credentialed with mild/moderate provide educational planning, specialized instruction, extra support or other services to exceptional learners in both the Resource Program and The Special Day Program.
Behavioral Services - GUSD employees a Board Certified Behavior Analyst to provide support for students with significant behavioral needs.
