Dear Parents and Guardians of GUSD Students, At last night's special board meeting the Gustine Unified School District's Board of Education approved an amended school calendar that moves the first day of school for students from August 12, 2020 to August 19, 2020. Delaying the start of the school year provides additional time for teachers and school administrators to prepare and acquire training for the delivery a robust distance learning program that is available for all students. As a reminder, on July 17th, Governor Newsom issued a new order that mandated all Merced County schools to remain closed. As a result of this mandate, GUSD will begin the 2020-2021 school year utilizing distance learning. At the end of the first quarter (October 16, 2020), the district will revisit instructional models (distance learning, hybrid, reopening) and make a decision moving forward per CDC, MCDC, and Governor Newsom's mandates. Hopefully, by this time, Merced County will no longer be on the State's COVID-19 watch list and we can begin planning for bringing our students back to GUSD campuses. I know there are still a lot of questions; I thank you for your patience during these challenging times. In the coming days you should receive information from your school sites regarding picking up Chromebooks, instructional materials, and supplies that will be needed during distance learning. As always, your child's(ren's) education is a priority; we will continue to work together to ensure your child(ren) receive the best educational experience possible during these unprecedented times. Sincerely, Bryan Ballenger, Ed.D. Superintendent
